Youth Philanthropy & Values-Based Grantmaking

Youth programs that help young people explore values, understand community needs, learn about nonprofits, review budgets, conduct site visits, and make thoughtful grant decisions

SWED Development supports youth philanthropy programs that help young people explore values, understand community needs, learn about nonprofits, review budgets, conduct site visits, and make thoughtful grant decisions.

These workshops can be designed for teen boards, giving circles, foundations, schools, synagogues, community organizations, or youth leadership programs.

Possible workshop topics include:

  • Introduction to philanthropy and communal responsibility

  • Identifying personal and group values

  • Creating a mission statement for a giving circle or grantmaking board

  • Understanding nonprofits and nonprofit budgets

  • Developing strong questions for site visits

  • Practicing consensus-building and grant decision-making

  • Reflecting on the responsibility and complexity of giving money away

Workshops are interactive and youth-centered, helping participants understand philanthropy not only as charity, but as a form of leadership, learning, and community care.
